Bobby Hurley and the Arizona State Sun Devils face a tough decision after facing a series of setbacks. The team is now down to just five scholarship players heading into a rivalry game against Arizona, with one more injury potentially spelling disaster for the season.
Already missing two starters, Hurley’s situation worsened when senior guard Adam Miller was sidelined just 28 seconds into Tuesday night’s game against Arizona. Despite attempting to play through a hip pointer, Miller was quickly removed from the game.
This left Arizona State with only five regular rotation players, including freshman Trevor Best, who had only played 61 minutes of college basketball prior to the game.
The Sun Devils had already been without five-star freshman Jayden Quaintance, a top defensive player and 2026 NBA lottery prospect, who has been out since suffering a knee injury against Kansas State on February 23.
In addition, Arizona State was already missing senior guard BJ Freeman, who was dismissed from the team for misconduct just over a week ago. Freeman had been the team’s leading scorer with 13.7 points per game.
The remaining players on scholarship for Hurley are veterans Basheer Jihad, Shawn Phillips Jr., and Alston Mason, along with true freshmen Joson Sanon and Amier Ali. This is the same lineup that was fielded during Saturday’s 99-73 loss to Utah, where the team gave up 58 points in the second half.
