NFL free agency hasn’t officially started yet, but former Ohio State Buckeyes star Joey Bosa has already become one of the most coveted players available following a major decision by the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday.
Bosa was a key figure on Ohio State’s 2014 National Championship team, recording 13.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss that season. Over his Buckeye career, he totaled 26 sacks and 51 tackles for loss, showcasing the dominant play that made him a top NFL prospect.
When healthy, Bosa has maintained that high level of performance in the NFL. However, after nine seasons, the Chargers have decided to part ways with the standout edge rusher.
Originally selected third overall in the 2016 draft, Bosa signed a five-year, $135 million extension with Los Angeles in 2020. That deal was later restructured into a two-year, $40.3 million contract last offseason. While he was set to hit free agency in 2025, the Chargers opted to release him now, freeing up over $25 million in cap space.

At 29 years old and with a history of injuries that has limited him to just two full regular seasons in his career, signing Bosa comes with significant risk. This could impact the size of the contract he secures in free agency. However, for a contending team that can deploy him in a rotational role—maximizing his elite talent while minimizing wear and tear—Bosa has the potential to be a highly valuable addition.
