What Washington State Football Must Do to Win
Washington State, after a strong start to the season with an 8-1 record, has now suffered two consecutive losses as it heads into its regular season finale against Wyoming. The Cowboys, with just two wins on the season, have had a disappointing year. While the Cougars are already bowl-eligible, a third straight defeat—especially to a struggling Wyoming team—could cause the season to unravel. Here’s what WSU must do to avoid that and get back on track.
Shut Down Wyoming’s Receivers
One of the main reasons Wyoming has struggled this season is its lackluster passing game. However, wide receivers Jaylen Sargent and Justin Stevenson have been bright spots, with over 600 yards and five touchdowns combined. If Washington State can neutralize them, it will severely limit the Cowboys’ offense. Defensive backs Ethan O’Connor, Tyson Durant, and Kapena Gushiken must prevent Sargent and Stevenson from gaining momentum or making big plays, effectively shutting down the passing game early.
Contain Shae Suiaunoa
Wyoming linebacker Shae Suiaunoa is one of the top defenders in the Mountain West, leading the team with ten tackles for loss and 80 total tackles. He’s a key disruptor for the Cowboys’ defense, so Washington State’s offense must account for him. Double-teaming Suiaunoa at the line of scrimmage will likely be necessary to prevent him from wreaking havoc on quarterbacks John Mateer and Wayshawn Parker. Additionally, WSU’s receivers and tight ends may need to help slow him down with quick chips on their routes. Containing Suiaunoa will help the Cougars’ offense stay in rhythm.
Control Time of Possession
One of the main reasons Washington State struggled against Oregon State was its inability to stop the Beavers’ offense, which controlled the ball for over 38 minutes. OSU ran long, time-consuming drives, keeping the Cougars’ offense off the field. To avoid a similar fate against Wyoming, WSU’s defense must get off the field on third downs and force punts. Takeaways will also be crucial. If the Cougars can manage to control possession and give their offense the chance to operate efficiently, they should be able to close out the regular season with a victory.
