Eagles Missed Out on $31 Million Bid for Super Bowl Champion
The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly attempted to sign two-time Super Bowl champion Justin Reid, but ultimately lost out to the New Orleans Saints in the bidding process.
On Tuesday, the Eagles traded safety CJ Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans after he rejoined Philadelphia in 2024. Gardner-Johnson played a key role in the Eagles’ top-ranked defense, leaving the team with a potential gap at safety.
Philadelphia was reportedly in the running for Reid, a former Kansas City Chiefs safety, but ultimately came up short. According to Underdog/Bleacher Report’s James Palmer, the race for Reid came down to the wire between the Eagles, Tennessee Titans, and the Saints, with New Orleans securing him in the end.
The Saints signed Reid to a three-year, $31.5 million deal, with $22.5 million guaranteed, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Reid would have been a valuable addition to the Eagles’ secondary after the Gardner-Johnson trade. Having spent three years with the Chiefs, Reid won two Super Bowls, including a victory over the Eagles. He also played in the Chiefs’ loss to Philadelphia in Super Bowl LIX, making him familiar with the Eagles.
If the Eagles continue to look to strengthen their secondary, they may look to sign another free agent in the near future.
