Rams Re-Sign Defensive Tackle
The Los Angeles Rams have re-signed defensive tackle Larrell Murchison, the player who recorded two sacks in his debut game with the team in 2022.
Murchison, who has shown flashes of potential throughout his five-year NFL career, has been plagued by injuries that have limited his playing time. The Rams are giving him another opportunity to prove himself.
The 27-year-old signed a one-year deal with the team on Friday night, keeping the unrestricted free agent in Los Angeles.
Standing 6-2 and weighing 285 pounds, Murchison, a veteran from North Carolina State, has the versatility to play across the defensive line. While he has experience playing both tackle and end with the Titans, the Rams have primarily used him on the interior.
Murchison made an immediate impact in his first game with the Rams, recording two sacks in their 51-14 victory over Denver on Christmas Day 2022. Notably, head coach Sean McVay hadn’t even met Murchison until after the game, as the Rams claimed him off waivers from Tennessee just two weeks prior.
In his first full season with the Rams in 2023, Murchison played a career-high 252 defensive snaps and started three games. However, injuries cost him the entire 2024 season. He sustained an arm injury during the preseason, which kept him out for the first month, and later broke his foot during his first practice back, sidelining him for the remainder of the year.
Murchison and the Rams are hoping to turn a new page in his career. After being drafted by Tennessee in the fifth round of the 2020 draft, he played in 10 games as a rookie and started five in 2021 despite battling knee and elbow injuries.
Murchison’s re-signing is the Rams’ second defensive move this offseason. It was especially important for the defensive line rotation, given that defensive tackle Neville Gallimore signed with the Colts on Thursday. The Rams also added defensive tackle Poona Ford from the Chargers earlier in the week, a key signing expected to start immediately.
On the downside, the Rams lost starting linebacker Christian Rozeboom, who signed with the Panthers on Wednesday.
Remaining free agents the Rams could look to retain include cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who made some key plays last season, and starting inside linebacker Troy Reeder.
