Chiefs Re-Sign Veteran Pass-Rusher
The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed veteran defensive end Charles Omenihu, strengthening their defensive line for the upcoming season. Omenihu’s return was confirmed Thursday night on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million.
The Chiefs have had an eventful offseason, initially facing challenges but now steadily assembling the right pieces to improve their roster for next season. Although they lost several key free agents, general manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs’ front office have been methodically addressing their needs, filling in the gaps little by little.
The team is focused on improving from their performance last season, which ended with a disappointing loss in Super Bowl LIX, where they played their worst game of the year. In hopes of avoiding a repeat performance, the Chiefs are taking strategic steps to bolster their lineup, and Omenihu’s re-signing is part of that effort.
Omenihu, who played a key role for the Chiefs in 2023 but was sidelined due to injury, returned to action late in the 2024 season. Despite missing most of the year, he recorded one sack during the regular season and another in the playoffs. A fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, Omenihu was traded to the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Chiefs for the past two seasons. Now, the Chiefs have brought him back on a deal that is favorable for the team.
With his ability to rush the passer and stop the run, Omenihu is expected to enhance the Chiefs’ defensive line. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will welcome his return, particularly now that he’s fully recovered. Omenihu will compete for a starting role in training camp and provide valuable depth to a defense that needs it.
The Chiefs are also looking to improve further in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
