The Seattle Seahawks have added more depth to both their wide receiver group and special teams unit. With the departures of DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, the Seahawks have completely revamped their receiving corps this offseason, signing four new wide receivers, including Steven Sims.
Sims, 27, was undrafted out of Kansas in 2019 and had a strong rookie season with the Washington Commanders, though he hasn’t been able to replicate that success since. On Tuesday, the Seahawks announced his signing, adding him to a receiving group that now includes Cooper Kupp, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and River Cracraft. The team has been working to rebuild around Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who broke out in 2024 with 100 receptions for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns.
At best, Sims is expected to be a depth option or serve as a kick and punt returner. He has experience returning kicks with several teams, including Washington, Pittsburgh, Houston, and most recently, Baltimore. Over his career, Sims has averaged 25.2 yards per kick return and 6.2 yards per punt return.
Sims made a splash as a rookie but has seen his production decline since. In 2019, he recorded 34 catches (56 targets) for 310 yards and four touchdowns, along with nine rushes for 85 yards and another score. Over six seasons, he has accumulated 78 catches for 704 yards and five touchdowns. While he’s unlikely to become a primary offensive weapon, there’s potential if he carves out a role in Klint Kubiak’s offense. Much of Sims’ early success came from the slot, where both Kupp and Smith-Njigba have excelled, making him a possible insurance option for Kubiak.
Similar to Cracraft, there’s a chance Sims may not make the final roster cuts at the end of August, but for now, he adds more depth to the wide receiver position.
