The coach of the Sun Devils is considering every possibility following his team’s failure to make two field goals in the fourth quarter.
Arizona State students will soon be given the opportunity to try out for the football team following a difficult performance by kicker Ian Hershey in the team’s 24-14 defeat against Cincinnati. Following two critical misses by the Sun Devils, coach Kenny Dillingham intends to host open tryouts for students in search of a resolution.
In the final quarter, Arizona State was losing 24-14 when Hershey failed to make two field goal tries, one from 48 yards and another from 41 yards, that could have narrowed the lead to one point. Those plays were crucial in a 10-point defeat against the Bearcats.
During his postgame press conference, Dillingham was straightforward when assessing the kicking game.
Dillingham expressed a desire to make a kick, but lamented the poor state of their team’s kicking game. Therefore, if you are able to and you happen to be at Arizona State, please send me an email. We will be holding kick tryouts on Monday, so be ready. Tryouts for kicking will be held on Monday. “Let’s get moving.”
“I’m completely serious,” Dillingham emphasized. We will share it on our social media platforms. Tryouts for kicking will take place on Monday. We need to locate someone who can kick a field goal.
Dillingham acknowleged the need for himself and his coaching staff to improve in preparing Hershey for such situations, while also stating the importance of exploring alternative options for the team.
Dillingham stated that we need to improve in helping him achieve a positive mental state for kicking. Similarly, I have a job to do and I need to have players on the field who can excel in those situations too.
We will improve through hard work and conduct a trial to assess someone’s abilities. If in any case it’s not available, then stick to the current situation and continue working. If someone is interested, we will invite them to join the team and start working together.
With Arizona State’s off week coming up next weekend, Dillingham will have the opportunity to figure out his kicking predicament, whether Hershey retains the position or another student steps in from the futon.
