Succeeding Nick Saban as the initial head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team was always going to be challenging, but first-year coach Kalen DeBoer is discovering that the role is proving to be more difficult than he expected.
DeBoer was ecstatic following Alabama’s exciting 41-34 victory over Georgia on September 28, which propelled the Tide to the top spot in the AP Poll.
However, Bama suffered defeats in two out of the following three matches, with their first loss to Vanderbilt in 40 years and a poor performance against rival Tennessee. Currently, DeBoer seems to be relying on a playful tactic to try to help his team recover.

Alabama tight end CJ Dippre informed the media this week that DeBoer had placed signs saying “TNT” throughout the Crimson Tide practice venue.
The signals represent “Zero Talent” and athletes must sprint up and touch them when they mess up in training.
“You error during a game, receive a penalty, run and touch the marker…we need to return to that.” Take responsibility for it. Embrace it. “Dippre instructed to discard it and move on to the next play with a 1-0 record.”
Currently, the concept appears to be fine at a superficial level. DeBoer is attempting to have his players concentrate on the details and eradicate errors.
However, the Tide is facing much larger problems. Quarterback Jalen Milroe went from being a potential Heisman Trophy winner to resembling an unsigned rookie free agent.
Freshman receiver Caleb Odom openly criticized his teammates and head coach on social media, and DeBoer is refusing to answer questions on his weekly radio program.
DeBoer excels as a head coach. The reason behind his successful coaching career is evident in his accomplishments at each stop he’s made. However, simply putting up signs during practice won’t be enough to resolve this chaotic situation.
