Altrincham news: Altrincham Mourns The Loss Of Club Legend Who Dies At 62

The entire Altrincham community mourns the loss of Barry Butler, who passed away at the age of only 62. Barry joined Altrincham from Barrow in March 1994 after establishing himself at Chester, where he served as club captain for seven years.

Unfortunately, Barry’s time at Altrincham was cut short due to a severe double leg fracture he sustained during a 1-1 home match against Woking in September 1996. Alongside his football career, Barry managed a window-cleaning business both during and after his tenure at Altrincham.

In 2016, Barry attended a reunion of the Altrincham squad at Moss Lane, commemorating their match against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup two decades earlier. In the photo from that event, Barry can be seen on the far right.

Chester FC announced the passing of Barry Butler, a loyal member of Harry McNally’s team in the 1980s and early 1990s, at the age of 62 after battling dementia.

Known as the ultimate versatile player, Barry appeared in 268 league matches for Chester. Hailing from Farnworth, Barry made his move to Chester from Atherton LR in December 1985. Over eight seasons, he played various positions for the club, including central defender, full-back, midfielder, and striker. In a memorable moment, he even took on the goalkeeper role for 75 minutes during a match against Bradford City in October 1990.

After parting ways with Chester following the relegation season of 1992/93, Barry went on to play for Barrow before transferring to Altrincham in 1994.
