Andrej Stojakovic Powers Illinois to Sweet 16: ‘We Came Here For a Reason’
After spending two seasons on the West Coast with Stanford Cardinal men’s basketball and California Golden Bears men’s basketball, Andrej Stojakovic had yet to experience a winning season or play in the NCAA Tournament. That changed when he transferred to Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball.
Although his scoring average dipped from 17.9 points per game last season to 13.3 this year, and he transitioned into a bench role, the move has paid off in a big way. In just one season with Illinois, Stojakovic has nearly matched his previous career win total, contributing to a team that has now reached the Sweet 16.
Reflecting on his first NCAA Tournament appearance, Stojakovic described the experience as “surreal,” noting how quickly any pregame nerves disappeared once play began. His decision to transfer was heavily influenced by head coach Brad Underwood and the opportunity to be part of a winning program.
That decision has proven worthwhile. Illinois has racked up 26 victories and a deep tournament run, with Stojakovic playing a key role. In the team’s Round of 32 win over VCU Rams men’s basketball, he led all scorers with 21 points in just 26 minutes off the bench.
During the game, Stojakovic sparked a crucial 9-0 run that erased Illinois’ only deficit late in the first half, shifting momentum in their favor. The Illini carried that energy into the second half, pulling away for a 76-55 victory.
After the game, Stojakovic emphasized the team’s shared purpose, saying that he and the other newcomers joined Illinois to help the program succeed. With a strong belief in the team and its direction, he made it clear they are focused on controlling their effort and intensity as they continue their tournament run.
