Angel Reese Fires Back a Bold Response to Cathy Engelbert’s Social Comments

Angel Reese is targeting Cathy Engelbert over recent remarks made by the WNBA Commissioner about handling sensitive social issues. Engelbert’s comments on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” stirred controversy, leading to criticism from the WNBA Players’ Association (WNBPA) and a notable response from rising star Angel Reese.

In her interview, Engelbert compared the current contentious climate on social media among players and fans to the historic Bird-Magic rivalry of 1979, suggesting that such rivalries are essential for maintaining viewer interest.

“There’s no more apathy. Everybody cares. It’s a little of that Bird-Magic moment… You need rivalry. That’s what makes people watch,” Engelbert said.

The WNBPA took issue with Engelbert’s comparison. Executive Director Terri Jackson firmly rejected the analogy, arguing that the issues at hand are too serious for such comparisons and require more immediate and substantive action.

“This is not about rivalries or iconic personalities fueling a business model… It demands immediate action, and frankly, should have been addressed long ago,” Jackson stated.

The discontent was further expressed by Liberty star and WNBPA Vice President, who criticized Engelbert’s remarks.

The situation intensified when Angel Reese made a pointed comment on social media. In a playful jab, Reese responded to a post by Nneka Ogwumike, suggesting Ogwumike’s potential future as WNBA commissioner with the remark, “Hey commisss…I mean madam presidentttt.”

Ogwumike, who has served as WNBPA president for eight years, wields considerable influence within the league.

As the gap widens between Engelbert’s cautious approach and the WNBPA’s call for more decisive action, the league faces ongoing challenges in managing effective governance while addressing player advocacy and social responsibility.
