Arlington Seguin football dominates North Mesquite, opening the season with a shutout victory!

Arlington Seguin’s Malachi Meche quickly found his groove as a running back during their impressive 58-0 victory over North Mesquite at Choctaw Stadium. The senior, who was an all-district wide receiver last year, made his mark early in the game. Just after Chuck Morgan announced it was “Football Time in Texas,” Meche made an immediate impact. Although his first carry resulted in no gain, he soon turned it around with a 75-yard touchdown run shortly after the game began, giving the Cougars an early lead they maintained. By the early second quarter, Meche had scored three touchdowns—two rushing and one via a punt return.

Meche plays a versatile role for the Cougars, with head coach Joe Gordon emphasizing his explosive abilities. Seguin, who finished last season at 5-4, dominated the first quarter, racking up 29 points. After forcing North Mesquite to punt, quarterback Chevy Andrews made a crucial 36-yard run on a 4th-and-13, setting up a 20-yard touchdown from Isaac Bly. Following a quarterback change for North Mesquite, the Cougars quickly capitalized on another three-and-out and expanded their lead with Meche’s 76-yard touchdown run. Andrews then connected with Carterrious Brown for a 16-yard score, and Meche added a 55-yard punt return touchdown shortly thereafter.

Meche showcased his speed, clocked at 4.46 for the 40-yard dash during a summer training camp, as he dashed down the sideline for the punt return. The score stood at 35-0 by halftime, with Seguin adding two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. G’Mani Smith scored on a fourth-and-goal from the 2, and Leontay Bowman-Hunt took a handoff for a 69-yard touchdown run.

North Mesquite, struggling with a 1-9 record last season, extended their losing streak to 10 games, failing to cross midfield until late in the third quarter. This marked Seguin’s first shutout since October 2020. Next up, Seguin will face Red Oak on Friday night at Goodloe Stadium.
