The Houston Astros are facing a tough decision this offseason as their dynasty shows signs of slipping. The key issue revolves around third baseman Alex Bregman. With rumors that Bregman is seeking a $200 million deal, a hefty investment for an already stretched Astros ownership group, the team faces a choice: either re-sign Bregman or let him go, which would signal the slow disintegration of their championship-contending core.

Recently, Deadspin’s David Brown predicted that the Astros would part ways with Bregman, forecasting a seven-year, $176 million contract for him to join the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers, who eliminated the Astros from the playoffs in October, are an up-and-coming team, and Bregman could be a key piece of their future.

Brown noted that while Bregman’s offensive numbers—.260/.315/.453—were not eye-popping, they were consistent with his production over the past five seasons, and he still earned a Gold Glove at third base.

In Detroit, Bregman would not only join a promising young squad but also reunite with former Astros manager A.J. Hinch, who guided Houston to its 2017 World Series title before his suspension in the aftermath of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

The move would strengthen the Tigers, potentially making them a major contender in the American League, and would sting the Astros if Bregman were to thrive there. However, with Tucker likely commanding a contract near $300 million, the Astros may be forced to let Bregman go in order to prioritize their other stars.

Bregman, known for his fiery demeanor, could become a major thorn in Houston’s side if he ends up in Detroit, potentially haunting his former team for years to come.
