ASU football Coaches Have confidence in QB Jeff Sims to Lead the Team Against Cincinnati in the Absence of Sam Leavitt.

TEMPE — Even though ASU football will be without starting quarterback Sam Leavitt against Cincinnati on Saturday, the coaches are maintaining a normal routine with veteran backup Jeff Sims running the offense.

Arizona State offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo noted after practice on Wednesday that the situation is uncommon due to the similarity in skill level and playing style between Leavitt and Sims.

Arroyo stated that they have not needed to make any changes to the offense, which is fantastic. This is an homage to Sims, the unit, and all those in his vicinity. At the end of the day, even though there is a new quarterback, there are still 10 other players on the field. These players need to come together and support the quarterback, instead of leaving him to perform alone on the field.

Sims is well-acquainted with that situation, having accumulated over 6,000 total yards in 30 games while playing for Georgia Tech and Nebraska as a 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior. Even though he has been in two games in a restricted capacity for ASU, this will mark his inaugural start since his transfer during the summer.

Kenny Dillingham, the head coach, mentioned that the game-plan was prepared for both quarterbacks as he was uncertain about which one would start at the beginning of the week.

“Dillingham said on Wednesday that both athletes are capable of making all the necessary throws.” Jeff’s weakness is turnovers, but statistics can sometimes be deceiving when it comes to turnovers.

Sims recorded almost the same number of interceptions as passing touchdowns, with a total of 29 picks during his college years. He lost 12 out of the 21 fumbles he was charged with, which is the same number as his rushing touchdowns.

Dillingham cited instances like poor snaps, missed catches, and long, desperation throws as some of the turnovers that he saw.

In the open practice on Wednesday, Sims focused on short passes to the flats or running backs and also completed a post route to wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, connecting successfully multiple times. Frequently, the threat of his running ability was employed in rollouts.

It is probable that running back Cam Skattebo will bear a significant amount of the responsibility. He had his highest number of touches in Week 2 against Mississippi State with 36, and carried the ball 25 and 22 times in the last two games.

Dillingham stated that it is not certain whether Leavitt will return on Nov. 2 against Oklahoma State following Arizona State’s second bye week.

Metayer has accumulated 13 receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns in his two seasons with the Bearcats, while Wodtly, who played four seasons, has recorded two tackles for loss and recovered two fumbles, returning one for a touchdown.
