Falcons Add Veteran QB Trevor Siemian for Depth
The Atlanta Falcons have strengthened their quarterback group in free agency by bringing in veteran Trevor Siemian, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Siemian, 34, is expected to serve as the team’s third quarterback, providing experienced depth behind Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa.
Originally selected by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Northwestern, Siemian spent his first three seasons in Denver before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings, where he played under current Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski. He later had stints with several teams, including the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, and Cincinnati Bengals. Most recently, he was on the Titans’ practice squad.
Over his career, Siemian has made 33 starts, posting a 15-18 record while completing 58.5% of his passes for 7,751 yards, 44 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions. His most notable stretch came with Denver in 2016, when he won the starting job and led the team to an 8-6 record, earning Pro Bowl alternate honors.
Since then, he has primarily served as a backup or spot starter, with his last game action coming in 2023.
In Atlanta, Tagovailoa and Penix are expected to compete for the starting role. If Tagovailoa wins the job, he would become the Falcons’ sixth different Week 1 starting quarterback since 2021. Team leadership has emphasized that the quarterback position—like the rest of the roster—will be determined through competition.
Meanwhile, Penix is working his way back from a torn ACL suffered in Week 11 last season. While his exact timeline remains unclear, he has expressed confidence that he’ll be ready for Week 1.
Until then, Siemian provides a steady veteran presence who can handle backup responsibilities as the Falcons navigate the early part of the season.
