Despite being in their 35th season in the NBA, the Charlotte Hornets have yet to produce a superstar on the court. That could change soon if LaMelo Ball or Brandon Miller—ideally both—reach their full potential.
Interestingly, the Hornets drafted a player in 1999 whose blend of talent, size, athleticism, and charisma suggested he could have been a superstar. When healthy and focused, Baron Davis was a formidable two-way player and a tough matchup. However, injuries and motivation issues hindered his career.
Davis has a vision for how Charlotte might finally acquire a superstar, and it involves Stephen Curry, a player who grew up in the Queen City.
In an interview with DJ Siddiqi, the two-time All-Star discussed the impressive performances of Curry and LeBron James on Team USA, which sparked speculation about a possible NBA collaboration between the two. However, he confidently predicted that such a team-up wouldn’t happen in the league.
Instead, Davis expressed hope that Curry would finish his career with the Warriors, stating, “Steph can play forever with the way he’s shooting the ball. I’d love to see him retire with Golden State. If not, maybe the Charlotte Hornets.”
This isn’t the first time Curry’s potential move to the Hornets has been mentioned. During the 2024 offseason, when he removed “Guard for the Warriors” from his Instagram bio, speculation arose about his long-term plans with Golden State. This led to discussions about Curry possibly returning to his hometown, which he has said would be the only place he’d consider if he left the Warriors.
While it seems unlikely that the 10-time All-Star will depart from the Warriors, especially with a lucrative contract set to last until 2027, by then he would be 39, and his prime would likely be behind him.
However, as Davis pointed out, Curry’s style of play is timeless. Even at an older age, he would still be a perfect fit alongside Ball and Miller. Some fans might worry about defensive vulnerabilities with this hypothetical trio, but both young players have committed to defense, so perimeter defense could be solid.
Ultimately, while it’s exciting to envision Curry in a Hornets uniform lighting it up in Charlotte, it’s best for fans to leave that idea as a fantasy.
