Defense Steals the Show in Barton’s Blue-White Spring Game
Defense took center stage at Barton College’s annual Blue-White spring football game, as the White team secured a 7–3 win on a perfect Saturday evening at Truist Stadium. Linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator Kim Brown had plenty to smile about, with both defenses controlling the action throughout.
The game’s only touchdown came early, when White quarterback Cam Estep connected with Jaiden Lee for a 49-yard scoring pass on just the seventh play. From there, the White squad—guided by special teams coach Charlie Mauze—held off the Blue team, led by offensive line coach Cam Avery. Blue’s lone points came via a 35-yard field goal from Cruz Nelms in the second quarter, while another attempt before halftime hit the upright.
More important than the final score was the opportunity for head coach Chip Hester and his staff to evaluate the 2026 Bulldogs in a game-like setting before fall camp begins. With quarterbacks not allowed to run, defenses had an advantage, leading to a combined nine “sacks” and limited offensive rhythm. Despite the intensity, turnovers were absent and penalties were minimal, aside from offsetting unsportsmanlike calls after a brief skirmish.
Hester noted both positives and areas needing improvement. He was encouraged by flashes from the quarterbacks, particularly their ability to extend plays and find receivers downfield, as well as the defense’s consistent pass rush. However, he emphasized the need for greater consistency, attributing some uneven play to mixing lineups that hadn’t practiced together extensively.
The spring format also included restrictions such as no live special teams and a running clock for most of each half. Hester explained that spring practices are a time to experiment with different players, positions, and schemes to evaluate strengths and weaknesses before integrating incoming recruits this summer.
Barton also revealed its 2026 schedule during halftime, opening the season on August 27 at Virginia State. The Bulldogs will follow with home games against Shaw and Bluefield State before beginning Conference Carolinas play at Chowan. A stretch of four home games later in the season includes matchups with West Alabama, Ferrum, UNC Pembroke, and defending champion North Greenville. Road games at Shorter and Erskine close out the regular season, with additional conference games set for mid-November.
Individually, both defenses stood out. The Blue unit was led by linebackers Zayvion Brady, Sean-Jacob Bethea, Cam Royal, and Bryan Charles, while the White defense featured strong performances from ZyQuarius Shaw, Ryland Edwards, Connor Baker, and linemen Josh Nolan, Ryan Baxter, and Kam Barbee.
Estep finished 8-of-17 passing for 180 yards, with Lee hauling in two catches for 60 yards. A key fourth-quarter play—a 66-yard connection to running back Dakauri Davis—helped seal the win. Tight end Luke Ellington and receiver JoJo Artis also contributed, while Blue quarterback Naz Garrett threw for 166 yards, with Tyler Davis posting an impressive 136 receiving yards.
With a heavily reshaped roster following the departure of more than 30 players, including several all-conference selections, the team is embracing a fresh start. Veterans like Nolan described the atmosphere as “refreshing,” while Tyler Davis highlighted the team’s growing chemistry despite the influx of new faces.
Players remain confident heading into the upcoming season, believing they can compete strongly within Conference Carolinas after a .500 league performance last year. As Hester put it, there’s still work to be done, but the foundation built this spring offers plenty of encouragement for what’s ahead.
The event also featured a return from former Barton standout Jordan Terrell, a two-time All-American running back who amassed over 5,400 rushing yards in his career and recently played in the Canadian Football League, adding a nostalgic touch to the evening.
