“Blessed to Receive the Offer” as ETSU Tennnessee Basketball Blusters Coaching Staff With Elite Prospect

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) basketball coach Brooks Savage completed his coaching staff on Thursday by naming Blake Sexton as an assistant coach.

Sexton worked as a student manager at Tennessee under head coach Rick Barnes from 2021 to 2024.

“Blake began his career the same way I did, as a student manager at Tennessee,” said Savage. “His experience with Coach Barnes and the staff has been invaluable. He has a relentless work ethic, a deep understanding of operating at a championship level, and the passion and drive to influence winning. As a Tennessee native, he is well-connected within the state and the college basketball community.”

While at Tennessee, Sexton managed daily operations, handled equipment, assisted at practices, and helped with opponent scouting and on-campus recruiting. He contributed to Tennessee’s success, including their 2023 SEC Tournament win, their first since 1979, the 2022 Battle 4 Atlantis victory, and the 2024 SEC regular-season title. The Vols also reached two Sweet 16s and one Elite 8 during Sexton’s tenure.

“ETSU has a rich history of success, and being here is a blessing,” said Sexton. “I’m eager to learn from Coach Savage, who is highly respected in college basketball. I look forward to working with this outstanding group of players and the incredible staff.”

Sexton also supported the coaching staff with individual workouts, working closely with NBA players such as Kennedy Chandler, Julian Phillips, and Dalton Knecht. He also collaborated with NBA G-League player Justin Powell and other Vols playing professionally overseas, including Victor Bailey Jr., John Fulkerson, Uroš Plavšić, and Tyreke Key.

Sexton graduated this past spring with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Sport Management, majoring in Sport Management.
