BREAKING: ‘Good news’ Iowa beat prominent programs to land commitment for gifted player

Iowa football has landed its second commitment for the 2026 recruiting class.

A talented quarterback has pledged his commitment to the Hawkeyes. At 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, he’s garnered offers from various schools, including UCLA, Virginia Tech, Minnesota, and several Ivy League institutions.

Iowa offered him this summer after he participated in a camp with the team.

Currently, Iowa has two quarterbacks committed for the 2025 class: three-star Jimmy Sullivan from Fort Wayne, Indiana, who has received a scholarship, and three-star Ryan Fitzgerald from Wilmette, Illinois, who will join as a preferred walk-on despite multiple FBS and FCS full-ride offers.

Herrera visited Iowa earlier this fall for the Cy-Hawk game against Iowa State and described the experience as fantastic, stating, “The conversations with Coach Lester were great, and we have definitely built a solid relationship.”

During the Cy-Hawk game, Herrera likely gained insights into Iowa’s offensive style, strategy, and how coaching utilized their quarterbacks in different scenarios. He noted areas of effectiveness, player execution, and how he envisions himself fitting into their system.

“The passing game wasn’t very prominent on Saturday, but they were taking what the defense gave them,” Herrera observed. “There were definitely passing plays available that weren’t fully executed.”

Earlier this summer when the Hawkeyes extended their offer, Herrera reflected on his impressions of their offense. “When they offered, Coach Tim Lester complimented my performance, especially my footwork, rhythm, and timing,” he said. “What I find most appealing about their offense is its pro-ready nature.”

He added, “Coach Lester, coming from the Packers and working under Coach Matt LaFleur, brings a creative offensive approach that prepares you for the professional level while still in college.”

According to 247Sports, Herrera ranks as the No. 43 quarterback in the national 2026 class. As a junior, he completed 123 of 187 passes for 1,686 yards, throwing 21 touchdowns and just three interceptions, according to MaxPreps.
