Breaking: Urban Meyer Was Accused Of Shockingly Paying Players To Come Play For His Program According To A Big-Time College Football Player Who Was Offered A Bag Of Cash From Him
Urban Meyer is renowned as one of the top coaches in college football history. He gained fame as the head coach at Florida, securing two National Championships with quarterback Tim Tebow, and later achieved further success at Ohio State, claiming another title with third-string quarterback Cardale Jones, which elevated his status in the sport. Prior to his illustrious head coaching career, Meyer worked as a wide receiver coach at Notre Dame. During this time, allegations surfaced accusing him of enticing players to come to South Bend by offering them cash.
B.J. Johnson Accused Urban Meyer Of Offering Him Money To Play At Notre Dame
In the year 2000, B.J. Johnson, a sought-after high school wide receiver, decided to attend Texas for college football. However, during his recruitment, he received a surprise cash offer from Meyer to join Notre Dame. Johnson shared a story on the On Texas Football podcast about Meyer confining him in a room at his high school and inquiring about the amount of money that would persuade him to choose Notre Dame. Matt Galatzan from Longhorns County reported this in the podcast.
“Urban Meyer trapped me in a room at my school and bluntly questioned me,” Johnson revealed in the interview. “He asked, ‘BJ, what’s your price?’ This occurred while he was working at Notre Dame. I was taken aback as I had assumed our discussion was solely about football. He insisted, ‘No, I mean how much?’ This type of thing has been happening.”
Who can say if the story is accurate? It took place nearly 25 years ago, and Johnson didn’t attend Notre Dame, so he couldn’t have received money from Meyer or the Fighting Irish program. As Meyer is no longer coaching college football and with college players now permitted to earn money from NIL deals, it’s unlikely that the NCAA would prioritize investigating this matter.
I am certain that there are numerous accounts of athletes from the past who found themselves in situations similar to Johnson’s, being approached by coaches with offers of money. It’s possible that more players will step forward to share their experiences with other coaches and programs.
