Regarding the pitchers, Nick Pivetta has had a fairly average season with the Red Sox, carrying a 4.50 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Over his 16 starts this season, he has struck out 102 batters. However, he is coming off his least effective performance of the season, where he allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work. Historically, Pivetta has allowed hits to five Mariners players: Randy Arozarena, who is 8-for-22 with two solo home runs and four walks; Jorge Polanco, who is 4-for-8 with two home runs, three RBIs, and two walks; Cal Raleigh, who is 3-for-7 with two solo home runs and a walk; Luke Raley, who is 2-for-6; and Victor Robles, who is 1-for-6 with two RBIs and a walk.
On the other side, Logan Gilbert has been exceptional for the Mariners this season. He boasts a 2.72 ERA, which ranks seventh in all of Major League Baseball, and a 0.86 WHIP, the best in the league. He has also struck out 132 batters in his 21 starts, placing him 15th overall in strikeouts. Against the Red Sox, Gilbert has allowed hits to five players: Jarren Duran, who is 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and a walk; Ceddanne Rafaela, who is 2-for-3; Dom Smith, who is 1-for-3; Connor Wong, who is 2-for-3 with a walk; and Masataka Yoshida, who is 1-for-6 with an RBI.
This matchup promises to be an intriguing one, with Boston looking to improve their standing after recent setbacks and Seattle seeking to leverage their strong pitching performance to gain an advantage.
