Penn State Lands 4-Star Tight End for 2027 Class
Penn State continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail, securing a commitment from four-star tight end Cooper Terwilliger of South Dakota. He becomes the latest addition to the Nittany Lions’ 2027 class, which now features seven commits and is steadily rising in the national rankings.
Terwilliger chose Penn State after considering several top programs, including Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama, Texas A&M, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri. His decision followed multiple visits to State College, including a key trip in January. Head coach Matt Campbell had been recruiting him for years, initially extending an offer while still at Iowa State.
Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 225 pounds, Terwilliger is ranked as the No. 12 tight end nationally according to the 247Sports Composite, while Rivals places him among the top 200 overall prospects. He plays at T.F. Riggs High School in Pierre, where he helped lead the team to a seventh straight state championship. During his junior season, he recorded 38 catches for 549 yards and four touchdowns, bringing his two-year total to 79 receptions.
Terwilliger is now one of the highest-rated players in Penn State’s 2027 class, alongside Iowa wide receiver Landon Blum. Both hold 90 ratings from 247Sports and rank among the top 250 prospects in the country.
With this commitment, Penn State’s 2027 class has climbed to No. 18 nationally in the 247Sports Composite rankings, marking its first appearance in the top 20 under Campbell. The surge comes after a strong stretch of recruiting activity, with all seven current commits joining since spring practices began in late March—including five in just one week.
Campbell has emphasized a patient, relationship-focused approach as he rebuilds the class following a reset earlier this year. After all previous 2027 commits decommitted in the wake of a coaching change, Penn State has quickly regained momentum by prioritizing cultural fit and long-term development.
With Terwilliger now on board, the Nittany Lions continue to strengthen a class that is gaining national attention and setting a solid foundation for the future.
