Virginia Cavaliers senior point guard has decided to enter the transfer portal, signaling his departure from the program. This choice comes in the wake of the transfer portal opening for UVA players for 30 days following Tony Bennett’s retirement.
He joined Virginia this offseason after transferring from Florida State, where he had spent three seasons. The Cavaliers had previously recruited him out of high school, and he came to Charlottesville to compete for the starting point guard position.
His exit is a notable blow to the UVA roster ahead of the 2024-25 season and creates challenges for interim head coach Ron Sanchez. The last 10 days have been turbulent for the Virginia program and the athletic department, and Warley’s departure further complicates both the on-court and off-court dynamics. He was one of the team’s most seasoned players and was anticipated to start at point guard on November 6.
At 6-foot-7, Warley was the top, and arguably the only, wing defender on the roster. His length and ability to advance the ball in transition made him a crucial asset for establishing the team’s tempo. While he wasn’t known for his shooting, he brought stability to areas where Virginia needed more depth.
With Warley’s departure, Kansas State transfer Dai Dai Ames, redshirt freshman Christian Bliss, and junior Andrew Rohde are set to compete for the point guard position, with Ames likely to earn the starting role. Additionally, there’s a chance that Dante Harris, who is still enrolled at UVA and is familiar with the program, could rejoin the official roster.
