Broncos WR Courtland Sutton Talks About Encouraging Message to Bo Nix After Chiefs Loss
Courtland Sutton shared what he privately told rookie quarterback Bo Nix after the Denver Broncos’ tough loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the defeat, Sutton had words of encouragement for Nix, who showed significant growth in his 10th career game.
Nix, taking control in the final moments of the game, orchestrated what looked like a game-winning drive—only for it to be thwarted by a blocked field goal as time expired. While the loss was heartbreaking, Nix’s poise under pressure stood out, and Sutton was impressed.
“I told him after the game that I was super proud of him,” Sutton said on Wednesday. “We didn’t get the win, but the way he handled the game, especially in that hostile environment against the defending champs, was impressive. For a rookie to go into Arrowhead and manage a two-minute drill the way he did, that’s all you can ask for.”
Despite the loss, there’s a noticeable shift in energy at Broncos HQ, with optimism surrounding Nix’s potential to become the franchise quarterback the team has long sought. Broncos offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi highlighted how Nix’s ability to avoid costly mistakes has been a big asset.
“When you trust a guy like that, it makes it easier to call plays,” Lombardi explained. “You know he’s not going to turn the ball over or make a dumb mistake, and that’s not always the case with older quarterbacks.”
Nix’s growth and leadership will be key to the Broncos’ chances of ending their two-game losing streak, with a crucial matchup against the Atlanta Falcons coming up. Despite the recent losses, Nix remains confident that the team is on the verge of turning a corner.
“I think we’ve been through a lot of ups and downs this year,” Nix said. “We’re close to overcoming that hump. We have a young team, and we’ve grown a lot. The best football is ahead of us.”
Earlier this week, Nix was named Rookie of the Week, despite the tough loss. His strong performance, combined with praise from Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, has elevated his status in the race for Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, Nix remains focused on team goals rather than personal accolades.
“That kind of stuff is awesome,” Nix acknowledged. “It’s an honor to get recognition from guys who’ve been doing this for so long, but the goal is to keep competing and winning. Earning respect is special, but it’s important to stay focused on the bigger picture.”
