Capitals Halt Golden Knights’ Season-Opening Winning Streak With 4-2 Win.

Alex Ovechkin helped set up goals for Tom Wilson and Aliaksei Protas with his assists. Simultaneously, Logan Thompson stopped 24 shots from his old team, helping the Washington Capitals give the Vegas Golden Knights their first defeat of the season with a score of 4-2 on Tuesday evening.

In his quest to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record, Ovechkin achieved another milestone by becoming the 60th player in NHL history to reach 700 assists. He has provided three assists in the first two games of the season for Washington and is still 42 goals behind Gretzky’s career total.

Jakub Vrana wasted no time making a significant contribution as he rejoined the Capitals, scoring with his very first shot of the season. Vrana, who helped Washington win the Stanley Cup in 2018 by beating Vegas, returned to the team after participating in training camp on a tryout. Jakob Chychrun scored his initial goal as a member of the Capitals after being traded from Ottawa in the summer.

Following changes during the offseason, Thompson, one of many newcomers for the Capitals, clinched the victory against Vegas after being traded by the Golden Knights, who decided against giving him a more prominent position. Adin Hill, the goalie who guided Vegas to victory in the 2023 Stanley Cup, conceded four goals out of 22 shots. Victor Olofsson and Jack Eichel found the back of the net for the Golden Knights.
