Chargers Add New $30M Starter Ahead of NFL Free Agency
The Los Angeles Chargers have already secured a new starter for quarterback Justin Herbert before the official start of NFL free agency.
Los Angeles appears determined to be aggressive this offseason. After acknowledging the team’s past shortcomings in building enough support around Herbert, general manager Joe Hortiz and head coach Jim Harbaugh have made an early splash with a notable signing.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Chargers have agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with former Washington Commanders center Tyler Biadasz.
Although the NFL’s free agency period doesn’t officially begin until next week, the early move signals that the Chargers plan to be active in the coming days.
Impact on Salary Cap and Free Agency
Heading into free agency, Los Angeles had about $99 million available in salary cap space. While the exact structure of Biadasz’s contract and his first-year cap hit remain unclear, the deal is unlikely to limit the team’s flexibility in pursuing other players on the market.
That flexibility could be important, as the Chargers still need to replace last season’s starting guards, Mekhi Becton and Zion Johnson.
Biadasz recently became available after being released by the Commanders, allowing him to sign with a new team immediately. An added benefit for the Chargers is that his signing will not count against the compensatory pick formula, giving the team even more roster-building flexibility this offseason.
