Double Take: Philadelphia Eagles Reviving Throwback Uniforms for Two Games in 2024

The Philadelphia Eagles revealed on Friday their plans to don their retro Kelly green uniforms twice during the upcoming 2024 season, marking a nostalgic nod to the era of Randall Cunningham and Reggie White. These throwback jerseys, which garnered significant attention last season, will make appearances in key matchups against the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 3 and the Dallas Cowboys on December 29.

The uniforms themselves are a homage to the Eagles’ design from 1987 to 1995, featuring Kelly green jerseys adorned with white block numbers outlined in black. The sleeves proudly display the Eagles’ alternate logo used during that period. Complementing the jerseys are Kelly green helmets sporting silver and white wings, alongside silver pants that incorporate a Kelly green, black, and white striping pattern. Completing the ensemble are white socks featuring two Kelly green and black stripes.

Philadelphia’s previous outings in these throwback uniforms were successful, resulting in victories over the Miami Dolphins (31-17) and the Buffalo Bills (37-34 in overtime) last season, both games showcasing the iconic attire.

In addition to the Kelly green throwbacks, the Eagles also sported their black alternate uniforms during a 33-25 win over the New York Giants on Christmas. This appearance likely positions them to fulfill the league’s allowance of up to three alternate or throwback uniform outings per season.

However, due to NFL regulations stipulating that teams not undergoing a full redesign must wait until 2025 to introduce a third helmet shell, the Eagles will continue to use their standard green helmets with their black alternate uniforms for the upcoming season. This follows their decision last year to repurpose their black helmets into Kelly green lids, a move they executed after initially wearing them three times during the 2022 season.

Moreover, beyond the uniforms themselves, the Eagles demonstrated their commitment to the throwback theme by transforming the field at Lincoln Financial Field for their throwback games last season. The field’s design featured the aforementioned vintage logo prominently at midfield, complemented by the team’s classic wordmark in the end zones. It is anticipated that similar field transformations will accompany the throwback games scheduled for this year, enhancing the nostalgic atmosphere for players and fans alike.

Overall, the Eagles’ decision to revive their Kelly green throwback uniforms for two games in the 2024 season reflects not only a celebration of their storied history but also a continuation of fan-favorite traditions that resonate deeply within the Philadelphia community and beyond.
