Duke Lands Talented Receiver Through Transfer Portal

Duke Adds Wide Receiver Help Through Transfer Portal

Duke head coach Manny Diaz and his staff navigated a turbulent offseason, facing significant roster turnover. Quarterback Darian Mensah unexpectedly entered the transfer portal shortly after indicating he would return, and top wide receiver Cooper Barkate followed soon after. Both players ultimately committed to Miami.

Although Duke pursued legal action over Mensah’s NIL agreement, the matter was resolved before reaching court. With key departures creating gaps on the roster, the Blue Devils have been active in the transfer portal to rebuild.

One of their latest additions is wide receiver Jonah Burton from Idaho State. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound receiver, ranked No. 528 at his position in the On3 Transfer Portal Industry Rankings, brings experience from multiple stops. Burton began his career at Baylor, recording nine catches for 110 yards in 2023 before missing the 2024 season. He then transferred to Idaho State, where he posted 21 receptions for 233 yards in 2025. With a medical waiver granted, Burton will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Reshaping the Receiver Room

Duke faces the challenge of replacing Barkate’s production after he finished second in the ACC in 2025 with 1,106 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Alongside Burton, the Blue Devils have added other transfer receivers who could help fill that void.

Javen Nicholas arrives from Charlotte after a breakout 2025 season in which he recorded 60 catches for 740 yards and five touchdowns, following earlier time at LSU. Meanwhile, Jared Richardson transfers from Penn after an impressive All-American campaign, totaling 80 receptions for 1,033 yards and 12 touchdowns while leading the Ivy League in multiple categories.

With these additions, Diaz has retooled the wide receiver group and positioned Duke to remain competitive in the ACC heading into the 2026 season.
