The game against the Red Deer Rebels, held at the Morinville Leisure Centre’s Landrex Arena, was more than just an exhibition match; it was a pivotal event supporting the Sturgeon Hockey Club (SHC), a local non-profit organization dedicated to youth hockey. The game marked the second consecutive year the Western Hockey League (WHL) Oil Kings took their preseason games on the road to benefit local hockey initiatives. For the Morinville community and SHC, the event was a significant opportunity to support and sustain their hockey programs. The Sturgeon Hockey Club caters to youth aged 3 to 17, focusing on player development through a blend of fun, competitive play, and challenge.

Planning for the game began when Kevin Radomski from the Oilers Entertainment Group reached out to SHC President Gene Connors. The proposal was swiftly acted upon, leading to a collaborative effort that resulted in the game being organized. According to Vikki McLaren, SHC’s Communications Director, the anticipation and excitement were palpable as ticket sales for the game were announced on Facebook. The arena sold out in a mere seven hours, highlighting the community’s eagerness to support the cause.

McLaren elaborated on the financial pressures facing minor hockey programs, noting that expenses such as jerseys and ice time have been rising steadily. The Sturgeon Hockey Club had additional financial burdens this season due to the renovation of the Legal Arena, which led to increased costs for securing ice time in other communities. The funds raised from the game were intended to offset these expenses, ensuring that the club could continue providing quality hockey experiences for its players.

SHC President Gene Connors expressed his profound gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community and sponsors. He described the event as a resounding success, both in terms of attendance and the positive impact on the club. The energy and enthusiasm displayed by families from Morinville and neighboring areas were deeply appreciated. Connors also extended his thanks to the various community sponsors who played a crucial role in making the event possible. These sponsors included the Town of Morinville, Jiffy Lube Morinville, Bistro di Madre Piccola, David Connors Real Estate, Your Friendly Neighborhood D.J. Mike Palma, G.H. The match itself was a thrilling spectacle. The Red Deer Rebels initially took the lead, scoring the first goal of the game and establishing a 1-0 advantage by the end of the first period. In the second period, the Rebels extended their lead to 2-0 before Joe Iginla of the Oil Kings scored to bring the game closer. Despite Iginla’s efforts, the Rebels managed to score twice more, pushing their lead to 4-1. The Oil Kings, however, refused to back down.

In a dramatic turn of events, the Oil Kings mounted a comeback with three consecutive goals. Presley Kerner scored twice, and Gavin Hodnett added another, leveling the score at 4-4 by the end of the second period. The third period was equally intense, with Joe Iginla once again putting the Oil Kings ahead, 5-4. The Rebels pulled their goalie in a last-ditch effort to tie the game, but Joe Toogood capitalized on the empty net to secure a 6-4 victory for the Oil Kings. This win marked their third consecutive preseason victory, having previously defeated the Prince George Cougars 6-3 and 6-2 in Edson.

The Oil Kings’ winning streak was briefly interrupted the following day, September 15, when they faced a 5-2 defeat against the Calgary Hitmen in Siksika. This loss was a minor setback as the Oil Kings prepared to kick off their regular season on Friday, September 20, with an away game against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
