Since the opening of the transfer portal in March, over 1,000 men’s Division I basketball players have made the leap to explore new opportunities. This significant influx has prompted The Athletic to establish its Transfer Portal Rankings, a dynamic resource continually updated to highlight the most noteworthy names for fans and coaches alike to monitor closely.

The rankings are a work in progress, evolving as new players enter the portal and existing ones are evaluated further. The sheer volume of players necessitates constant diligence from our team, who engage daily in discussions with college coaches to stay abreast of emerging talents. Given the scope of this undertaking, ensuring comprehensive coverage demands round-the-clock effort to assess each player effectively.

Our commitment is to deliver the most thorough scouting product possible, but evaluating every player takes time. If a player you believe should be ranked isn’t listed yet, rest assured that if their talent merits it, they will be included in due course. Currently, our rankings encompass more than 160 players as of late April.

Our criteria for inclusion are straightforward: a player must either publicly announce their entry into the portal or have their name officially listed within it. For those interested specifically in committed or available players, filtering options are available through our search tools. Once a player commits to a new school, we provide additional insights on how they fit into their new team in a dedicated section of their profile.

Several factors influence our rankings, including positional scarcity. While scoring guards are abundant, versatile wings and impactful big men are fewer in number and thus receive more favorable consideration in our assessments. Additionally, the potential years a player can contribute to their new program is a significant factor, with those capable of multiple seasons receiving enhanced rankings.

The transfer portal is set to close on May 1, with exceptions for players whose coaches have departed for other schools, affording them an extended window of 30 days to enter the portal. This ongoing process underscores our commitment to providing timely and insightful coverage of this transformative period in college basketball.
