Former DU Athletics Describe Their Experiences At The University Of Denver As Full Circle Moments.

Two former female student-athletes now working for DU Athletics reflect on their time at the University of Denver as full circle experiences.

From the instant Mia Sundstrom and Kacie Dohrmann arrived on campus, they felt inspired.

Dohrmann, a former college volleyball player, is thrilled to be part of the staff at the very place where she was a student-athlete, appreciating the remarkable support that continues to surround current athletes. She serves as the Deputy Athletic Director for the DU Pioneers.

“I remember being the one standing in line for autographs, pleading with my parents to stay an extra 45 minutes so I could get the signatures of the DU gymnasts to hang on my wall at home. Now, I find myself looking down the line of eager young faces, knowing I have the chance to be a positive influence in their lives,” she stated.

DU has had female athletic directors in the past, and that, along with the supportive Pioneers family, inspired Sundstrom and Dohrmann to pursue careers in sports.

“When it came time to choose a career, I reflected on what truly represents me, and it was linked to this sport. That led me to coaching, transitioning from the end of my athletic career to a new opportunity,” Sundstrom explained.

As they adjust to their roles in college athletics, both women aim to develop a new approach that they can proudly share with the next generation of athletes.

“I bring empathy while also being a straightforward woman. That can be challenging for some, but I embrace it,” Dohrmann said.

Mia Sundstrom and Kacie Dohrmann will represent one of over 25 sports organizations at CBS Colorado’s Girls in the Game event on Saturday, held on the DU campus. Hosted by Romi Bean, the event aims to encourage, inspire, and empower girls to explore careers in sports, both on and off the field.
