Although he only made one reception in the Yellow Jackets’ surprising upset victory over Miami on Saturday, it was a spectacular 15-yard diving catch in the end zone during the third quarter that gave Georgia Tech a 21-10 lead. The team went on to fend off Miami’s comeback efforts and secured a 28-23 win at home, making the Jackets bowl eligible at 6-4 and handing the Hurricanes their first loss. Lane, a transfer from Texas A&M who has recorded 15 catches for 180 yards and three touchdowns this season, watched a replay of his catch on Twitter/X that evening. He took the opportunity to share that it was a bittersweet day for him. “My papa passed away yesterday, this was for him!” Lane posted, clarifying that “papa” refers to his grandfather.
It was undoubtedly a defining victory for Georgia Tech, who managed to overcome the challenges posed by quarterback Haynes King’s shoulder injury by focusing on the ground game, rushing for 271 yards while only registering 99 yards through the air. “It was a good football game if you value running the ball, stopping the run, and controlling time of possession,” said Georgia Tech coach Brent Key. “Those principles still hold true. Our players performed well; they stayed composed and didn’t flinch.”
