Gonzaga Makes Late Push for No. 1 Recruit in 2026 Class
Could Gonzaga secure their second-ever No. 1 overall recruit?
The Bulldogs’ 2026 recruiting class is already among the most highly rated in program history, but that hasn’t stopped the staff from chasing the biggest remaining name on the market.
Tyran Stokes, widely regarded as the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class, is reportedly nearing a decision on his college destination, and Gonzaga—once considered unlikely to land him—remains a contender.
Gonzaga had pursued the 6’7″ wing last summer and even planned an official visit, but those efforts fell through. Stokes initially listed Kentucky, Kansas, and Oregon as his top three, seemingly putting Gonzaga on the outside.
Recent reports from Adam Zagoria suggest Gonzaga and Washington “have both made late charges” to recruit Stokes, who transferred to Rainier Beach High School in Seattle for his senior season. His move to the West Coast has improved both programs’ chances, though Kansas and Kentucky are still widely viewed as the frontrunners, especially after Bill Self confirmed he will return as Kansas’ head coach.
Gonzaga’s continued pursuit of Stokes indicates the staff is actively assembling a compelling pitch to attract the 5-star talent to Spokane.
Historically, Gonzaga has only had three 5-star commits: Chet Holmgren, Jalen Suggs, and Hunter Sallis. Holmgren remains the only player in program history ranked No. 1 nationally—meaning a Stokes commitment would be truly historic.
Scouting Tyran Stokes
At 6’7″ and 230 pounds, Stokes combines size, strength, and a 7’0″ wingspan to create matchup problems. Though built like a forward, he has guard-like skills, showing elite shot creation, downhill scoring in both transition and halfcourt sets, and strong facilitation and floor awareness.
Defensively, his size and physicality make him a potent presence, though he will need consistent effort to reach his ceiling. His outside shooting, while not elite, was a solid 36% last season.
Despite moving between multiple schools, Stokes’ fit in Gonzaga’s high-octane system could elevate the program, complementing Davis Fogle and Emmanuel Innocenti on the wing.
Gonzaga’s 2026 class already includes guard Jack Kayil, wing Luca Foster, and center Sam Funches, making it one of the best in school history. Adding Stokes could make it a transformational group as the Bulldogs prepare to enter the reimagined Pac-12 in 2026–27.
