Boston Celtics legend Bob Cousy believes that Team USA coach Steve Kerr holds negative feelings toward the Celtics, which he feels affect his professional decisions. This became a significant issue during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games when Kerr chose to bench Jayson Tatum for two games against Serbia on the way to winning the gold medal.

Cousy was among many who expressed strong discontent with Kerr’s decision, suggesting it stemmed from Kerr’s dislike for the Celtics and their players.

“When Kerr made that choice last week, the game was not at risk, but in this instance, they fell behind by 17 points and had to worry about losing,” Cousy told the Boston Globe. “Not allowing Tatum to play indicates there might be some bias against the Celtics.”

Tatum, who was the standout player for the Celtics last season and helped make them the best team in the NBA, would typically be expected to start. However, Kerr felt he wasn’t the best tactical choice for the situation in Paris.

The USA nearly faced elimination against Serbia, and Draymond Green commented on the situation. “Not playing [Jayson Tatum] was a mistake,” Green stated on his show. “Everyone knows it was wrong. He should’ve been on the court. From the outside, it seems like Kerr’s decision reflects a coaching error.”
