Houston’s Season Ends in Sweet 16 Loss to Illinois
The Houston Cougars struggled offensively in a 65-55 defeat to the Illinois Fighting Illini on Thursday night at the Toyota Center, bringing their 2026 season to a close with a 30-7 record. Houston shot just 34% from the field, and 55 points weren’t enough to keep pace with Illinois’ potent offense.
Houston trailed for much of the game, though freshman guard Kingston Flemings hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to narrow the halftime score to 24-22. The Cougars stayed within reach early on, but their continued shooting struggles in the second half allowed Illinois to pull away, at one point leading by 18 points.
Freshman forward Chase McCarty provided a late spark with three clutch three-pointers, cutting the deficit to seven, but Houston couldn’t complete the comeback. Senior guard Emanuel Sharp led the team with 17 points in his final game, hitting three three-pointers and cementing his legacy as one of Houston’s top shooters. Flemings added 11 points, though he struggled against Illinois’ length, while fellow seniors Milos Uzan (2-for-11) and Chris Cenac Jr. (3-for-12, 0-for-3 from three) had tough nights.
Illinois dominated in nearly every statistical category, including rebounding, where they held a nine-rebound advantage. With the loss, Houston now turns its focus to the offseason and preparations for the 2027 season.
