How Rangers star Jon Gray found purpose off the field: ‘It’s the thing I love most’

When Texas Rangers pitcher Jon Gray strikes out a major league hitter, it signifies more than just another batter sent back to the dugout. Each strikeout is a moment of triumph, but for Gray, it carries a deeper meaning rooted in his commitment to philanthropy. This commitment translates into tangible support for causes he believes in. Gray donates $100 for every strikeout he achieves to The Pawerful Rescue, an animal shelter in Royse City, Texas, and $500 for each win to the Adaptive Training Foundation, which assists athletes with physical or traumatic impairments in Carrollton.

These contributions are far more significant to Gray than the numbers that populate his stat sheet. “It’s better than anything I’ll do on the field, that’s for sure,” Gray stated in an interview. “I think it lasts longer, too. People will forget about games and all that, and how well you played one day, but they’ll always remember how you treated them.” This sentiment encapsulates Gray’s evolving perspective on what it means to be successful in sports and life.

Gray’s charitable endeavors extend beyond just financial donations. Alongside his wife, Jacklyn, he has established a foundation that focuses on making a positive impact in the community. They have hosted military personnel at Rangers home games, provided ballpark suites for homeless youth to celebrate their birthdays, and spearheaded the team’s annual toy drive, among other initiatives. His dedication to these causes did not go unnoticed; last year, he received the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award and the Rangers’ Roberto Clemente Award for his philanthropic work. Most recently, he has been recognized as one of the Major League Baseball Players Association’s “most valuable philanthropists” for 2024.

Over the years, Gray has found that this multifaceted charitable work has become more meaningful to him than any accomplishment on the baseball diamond. “It’s different, but it’s the thing I love most about baseball,” he said, highlighting how his priorities have shifted from a singular focus on athletic success to a broader commitment to community engagement.

Gray’s journey began in 2013 when he was drafted third overall by the Colorado Rockies following a stellar collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma. During his time there, he posted an impressive 1.64 ERA in 17 starts, earning him the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Pitcher of the Year award. At that point, Gray’s ambition was primarily centered around becoming a successful professional player. His early years in the league were consumed by the desire to prove himself, and that focus was understandably narrow.

As time went on, however, Gray began to broaden his horizons. “I just kind of realized what all of my actions going into each day were kind of like coming out to, what they kind of equaled to,” he explained. He recognized that he was placing too much emphasis on baseball and that striving solely for personal excellence left him feeling unfulfilled. This realization marked a turning point in his life and career.

Gray’s evolution in mindset can be traced back to the seasons of 2018 and 2019, a pivotal period during his tenure with the Rockies. Those years were characterized by both achievements and setbacks. In 2018, Gray started on Opening Day for the Rockies but found himself demoted to Triple-A later in the season. The following year, a season-ending foot injury interrupted what was shaping up to be one of the most effective seasons of his career. This series of events compelled him to reevaluate his relationship with the sport.

“I think that was when I kind of like — not necessarily gave up on baseball — but it stopped becoming so important to me because I realized that the crushing defeats of it, they were hard to come back from,” he shared. “I just realized I invested too much into that.” Instead of solely focusing on the ups and downs of his career, Gray redirected his energy toward causes that he could influence positively. “What I can control is how well we treat people in the community around us,” he stated, demonstrating a commitment to making a difference beyond the baseball field.

In 2021, Gray joined the Texas Rangers and quickly sought ways to engage with the Arlington community. His philanthropic initiatives flourished as he explored opportunities to give back. His on-field success continued as well; he played a key role in the team’s championship run last season, making 29 regular-season starts and contributing significantly during the World Series by holding the Arizona Diamondbacks scoreless in 4.2 innings of relief. This dual success in both philanthropy and performance only reinforced Gray’s belief in the importance of his off-field actions.

However, Gray faced challenges again this season as injuries limited him to just 19 starts. Despite these setbacks, he remains optimistic and anticipates being cleared for all baseball activities soon. He looks forward to visiting The Pawerful Rescue and training with the Adaptive Training Foundation as part of his recovery. Through this rehab process, he plans to lean on the hard-earned perspective that has shaped him both as a player and as a person.

“Everything’s an opportunity to me,” Gray concluded. “Instead of an opportunity to lose, it’s an opportunity to gain. And it’s a little more motivating, really, knowing that you’re going to help somebody out in the future. It’s more motivating than helping yourself.” This perspective underscores his commitment to not only excelling in baseball but also to enriching the lives of others.

Gray’s approach resonates with many athletes, as it highlights the transformative power of sports. While the world of professional athletics often emphasizes individual accolades and statistics, Gray’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of community involvement and social responsibility. His journey emphasizes that success is not solely defined by personal achievements but by the impact one has on others.

As Gray looks toward the future, he remains committed to balancing his career and his charitable endeavors. His experience serves as an inspiration to younger players and fans alike, showcasing how one can harness the platform of professional sports to create meaningful change.

In a world where sports figures are often scrutinized for their actions, Gray stands out as a player who has taken his role seriously, using his influence to uplift those around him. His philanthropic efforts demonstrate that athletes can be catalysts for change, and that their contributions extend far beyond the playing field.

Gray’s narrative is a testament to the potential of sports to not only entertain but also to forge connections and foster a sense of community. His commitment to giving back embodies the spirit of teamwork that transcends the game, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in creating a better society.

As he continues to navigate the challenges of his career, Gray’s dedication to philanthropy will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of his identity. His journey reminds us that the true measure of success lies not just in personal triumphs, but in the lives we touch and the legacy we leave behind. Through every strikeout and every win, Jon Gray exemplifies a player who has found purpose beyond the diamond, making a significant difference in his community and inspiring others to do the same.
