“HUGE BOOST” Duquesne University Men’s Basketball Program Has Signed a Professional Contract With Top Elite
Brewer Inks Pro Contract in Finland
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Former guard Tevin Brewer from the Duquesne University men’s basketball team has signed a professional contract with Kipinä Äänekoski in Finland’s 1st Division A League.
Brewer is the second Dukes player to secure a professional opportunity overseas in the past two weeks, following former forward Tre Williams, who signed with QSTA United in the BNXT League in the Netherlands.
A transfer from FIU and originally from Fort Smith, Ark., Brewer played with the Dukes during the 2022-23 season as a graduate student. He participated in 29 games, starting in 26, and averaged 7.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. A skilled shooter, Brewer hit 40.7 percent (81-for-199) of his field goal attempts in his single season at Duquesne, including 44 percent (44-for-100) from three-point range.
During his lone year at Duquesne, Brewer contributed to the team’s most significant turnaround in program history. The year prior to his joining, the Dukes had a record of 6-24 (.200) but improved by 12.5 games to finish 20-13 (.606) and earn a spot in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
In the 2022-23 season, Brewer led the Atlantic 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.82) and three-point shooting percentage, ranking 16th in NCAA Division I for assist-to-turnover ratio.
He scored in double figures 11 times, with a season-high of 17 points in a 75-52 win against George Mason at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, which marked head coach Keith Dambrot’s 500th career win at the NCAA Division I level. In that game, Brewer shot 7-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range. He also made a crucial floater from the foul line in the closing seconds to secure an 83-82 victory over North Florida.
Throughout his NCAA Division I career, including three years at FIU before transferring to Duquesne, Brewer accumulated 977 points and 417 assists over 95 games, achieving a 2.20 assist-to-turnover ratio. He is the 14th student-athlete coached by Dambrot at Duquesne to sign a professional contract.
The Dukes are now led by head coach Dru Joyce III, who begins his first season in 2024-25. The team returns two starters and nine letterwinners from a 2023-24 season that concluded with a record of 25-12 (.676) and marked their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1977.
