Proposed Hurricanes–Blues Trade Could Send $8.1M Forward to Carolina
With the NHL trade deadline less than two days away, speculation around the league is rapidly increasing. Reporters are gathering information from across the NHL, and the Carolina Hurricanes are expected to be active in trade discussions. Although Carolina already has strong roster depth, the pursuit of the Stanley Cup could push the team to make an aggressive move before the deadline.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Johnston and the outlet’s reporting team, St. Louis Blues right winger Jordan Kyrou has emerged as a player worth monitoring as Friday’s 3:00 p.m. EST deadline approaches.
Should Carolina Target Kyrou?
The Blues appear likely to act as sellers at the deadline, which means several teams could inquire about their top players. Goaltender Jordan Binnington has also surfaced in trade rumors, though nothing has developed so far. Kyrou’s situation is similar, though The Athletic highlighted several reasons why he could be moved.
Kyrou’s name previously surfaced in trade speculation before his no-movement clause officially began on July 1. The rumors picked up again in November after the struggling Blues made him a healthy scratch. Even though his production has dipped slightly this season, Kyrou remains a highly skilled winger known for his elite speed, strong vision, and creativity on offense.
He is currently signed through 2031 on an eight-year, $65 million contract that carries an annual cap hit of $8.125 million, which makes him a notable potential trade candidate.
Through 51 games this season, Kyrou has recorded 14 goals and 19 assists. While his shooting percentage has declined, his overall talent and offensive ability could still make him an attractive addition. If Carolina were to acquire him, he could slot into a second- or third-line right-wing role behind Seth Jarvis.
What Would It Cost Carolina?
If the Blues fully commit to selling ahead of the deadline, the asking price for some players could drop. For example, if the Hurricanes were willing to take on Kyrou’s long-term contract, it might reduce the overall trade package required.
That scenario could work in Carolina’s favor. However, if the Hurricanes are unwilling to move players such as Jesperi Kotkaniemi or Bradly Nadeau, they may need to offer draft picks or young prospects instead.
Another complication is potential competition from other playoff contenders. Teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars could also be active in the market as they look to strengthen their rosters ahead of the postseason.
