New York Knicks fans who subscribe to The Athletic will have a new beat writer covering the team this season.
On Monday, James L. Edwards announced on X that he is leaving his position as the Detroit Pistons beat writer to head to New York and cover Jalen Brunson and the Knicks.
Life update: After seven seasons covering the Pistons, I’m going to transition to cover the New York Knicks for The Athletic. FYI: The Athletic still plans on covering the Pistons. Stay tuned for more updates there.

Edwards had served as The Athletic’s beat writer for the Pistons for seven years. The Michigan native described the decision as a “difficult” one.
In his thread on X, Edwards thanked Pistons fans for providing him with “opportunities like this.”
He explained, “Why leave now, you ask? If I was ever going to cover another team, it had to make sense, and New York is one of the few places that matches Detroit’s passion for sports. This is the most thrilling time for Knicks fans in decades, and it was hard for me to pass this up.”
Last season, the Knicks continued their resurgence under head coach Tom Thibodeau, finishing second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 50-32. However, their playoff run ended abruptly in the Eastern Conference semifinals, where they lost to the Indiana Pacers in a seven-game series.
Fred Katz, who was the previous Knicks beat reporter for The Athletic, has transitioned into a national role as a senior NBA writer. He announced his promotion on Monday through X and gave a shout-out to Edwards.
“Knicks fans will be thrilled to know that the fantastic James L. Edwards is taking over the Knicks beat for us,” Katz wrote.
