Insides On NUPD, BPD investigating after Northeastern student, another person report attempted robberies on campus
A Northeastern University student was the target of an attempted unarmed robbery on the night of September 17, as reported in an email alert from the Northeastern University Police Department (NUPD) sent on the morning of September 18.
The NUPD Timely Warning Notification, sent to students on the Boston campus about 12.5 hours after the incident, detailed that a male suspect confronted the student on the Gainsborough Street side of the Camden Footbridge near the Massachusetts Avenue T station around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. The suspect attempted to yank off her necklace and take her cell phone, but ultimately no items were stolen. The victim sustained minor injuries, according to the alert.
The email also noted that the Boston Police Department has received similar reports involving the theft of necklaces and other chains, although this was the first incident reported on Northeastern’s Boston campus.
In response, NUPD will increase patrols around campus and advised students to take additional safety precautions, such as avoiding distractions like headphones and not walking alone.
UPDATE: Wednesday, September 18, 5:30 p.m.
A second attempted unarmed robbery involving a non-Northeastern individual occurred around 12:55 p.m. on September 18, as stated in a Timely Warning Notification from NUPD around 3:30 p.m. This incident took place at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Camden Street, where two male suspects tried to take the victim’s necklace but failed. The victim did not suffer any injuries, according to the alert. The suspects fled on a moped.
NUPD is continuing to increase patrols in the area and is collaborating with the Boston Police Department to investigate this incident.
UPDATE: Thursday, September 19, 6:30 p.m.
Two suspects involved in the attempted robberies on campus on September 18 were arrested around 12:30 p.m. on September 19, according to an email sent to Boston campus students at 4 p.m. The arrests were made off-campus by Brookline police.
