Iowa Head Coach Shares Honest Perspective After Loss to Michigan
The Iowa Hawkeyes came up just short against No. 3 Michigan on Senior Night, falling 71–68 despite a strong effort.
The score closely resembled Iowa’s earlier 71–69 loss to Penn State, though the flow of the game was very different. Michigan controlled much of the matchup, leading for about 63% of the contest. Still, Iowa had several chances late in the game to either tie the score or take the lead but ultimately couldn’t capitalize in the closing moments.
After the game, first-year head coach Ben McCollum delivered a candid message to the media that highlighted the commitment some of his players made to join the program.

McCollum explained that several members of the team made significant financial sacrifices to transfer to Iowa and help build the program’s foundation.
He pointed out that the team he previously coached at Drake won 31 games and was highly valuable in the transfer portal market. Because of that success, several of those players had other opportunities that likely offered more lucrative NIL deals.
Despite those options, players such as Bennett Stirtz and Tavion Banks chose to follow McCollum to Iowa. According to the coach, they believed in the vision of the program and wanted to help establish something meaningful for the university and the community.
McCollum emphasized that their decision to pass up potentially larger offers elsewhere should not go unnoticed. He said he hopes fans recognize how much those players sacrificed to be part of building Iowa’s future and believes their contributions will be appreciated even more in the years ahead.
Iowa Preparing for Its Next Phase
With Stirtz and Banks both nearing graduation, Iowa will soon have to move forward without some of the players who followed McCollum from Drake.
The head coach will now focus on identifying the next group of contributors for the Hawkeyes. With a relatively small 2026 recruiting class, success in the transfer portal will be especially important.
While Iowa still has its sights set on making the NCAA Tournament, that goal represents only the beginning of what could be a longer rebuilding process under McCollum. The strong crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena during the Michigan game showed there is enthusiasm around the program, but it’s clear the rebuilding effort is still in its early stages.
