Tar Heels Continue Strong Recruiting with Commitment from Nyla Brooks

Courtney Banghart and the North Carolina women’s basketball program are on a roll in recruiting. On Thursday, the Tar Heels secured a commitment from five-star recruit Nyla Brooks from the class of 2025. The 6-foot-1 wing from Alexandria, Virginia, was previously committed to Tennessee but reopened her recruitment after a coaching change.

Brooks considered several options before narrowing her list to four finalists, ultimately choosing UNC over Georgia, Tennessee, and Maryland. ESPN ranks her as the No. 14 prospect in her class.

“It was a good process,” Brooks shared with 247Sports. “Before I committed to Tennessee, many schools were in contact with me. When I de-committed, those programs continued to show interest, which meant a lot. I built relationships with several schools that were interested in me before my commitment. This time, I wanted to stay close to home on the East Coast.”

Brooks attends Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria. She chose North Carolina for its proximity to home, the school’s reputation among her parents, and its strong academic programs.

“I want to study sports management, and UNC has a top five program in the country,” Brooks noted.

On the basketball front, Brooks aims to make an immediate impact. “I want an opportunity to come in, work hard, develop, and reach the next level. I believe the coaching staff can help me achieve that,” she added.

Brooks has established good relationships with the coaching staff and appreciates the positive feedback she received from current players, even when she asked challenging questions. “They truly speak highly of the coaches, and I’ve felt a strong connection with the staff, who have bonded with my parents as well. It felt like the perfect fit for me.”

Brooks is the second notable recruit Banghart has landed recently, following five-star Taliyah Henderson. “North Carolina attracts top talent each year,” Brooks said. “I haven’t played against Taliyah or met her yet, but she seems like a great player. Together, we can make a significant impact on the program and contribute to an impressive 2025 class.”

Looking ahead to her role, Brooks shared that the coaching staff has a plan for her next season. “They want to give me the ball, let me create, and get me on the court. Nothing is guaranteed; I have to earn everything. I plan to work hard and aim to either start or be the sixth man. They’ve assured me I’ll have an opportunity to make an impact, which is exciting for the program,” she explained.

Brooks has already discussed a workout plan with the coaching staff for after her high school career. She has set both personal and team goals for her time at UNC. “My main goal is to start academically on a strong note and focus on my basketball game. I want to get stronger, extend my shooting range, and improve all around. Winning a national championship, claiming the ACC title, and making a mark at North Carolina are also important to me. I want to help elevate the program even further,” she stated.

According to Brandon Clay, Director of Scouting at 247Sports, Brooks excels at using her energy to be productive around the basket. He notes that while she has shown some shooting range, it will be essential for her to continue developing that skill. Her ability to rebound at a high level will be critical to her success in college, and she should focus on attacking the paint off the dribble.
