The Atlantic Schooners have opted for a low-key presence at Touchdown Atlantic, choosing instead to focus on laying the groundwork for their potential expansion into the CFL. This deliberate absence reflects their cautious approach, aiming to avoid creating false expectations regarding their progress towards establishing a Maritime-based franchise.
Gary Drummond, a key figure in Schooner Sports and Entertainment (SSE), emphasized their current position, stating they lack both the necessary funding and government support crucial for advancing their plans. “We don’t want to be presumptuous,” Drummond asserted, underscoring their enthusiasm tempered by the reality of the prerequisites still to be met. While optimistic about their role as potential catalysts for CFL expansion in the region, Drummond acknowledged they are not yet at a stage where public announcements would be appropriate.
Drummond hinted at potential developments coinciding with the Grey Cup game in Regina, slated for November 20, suggesting ongoing efforts behind the scenes to solidify their foundation. Reflecting on past lessons, particularly from premature announcements made before the 2018 Grey Cup, SSE has adopted a more measured strategy this time around.
Initially unveiled amidst fanfare prior to the 2018 Grey Cup in Edmonton, the Schooners were initially slated to become the CFL’s 10th franchise. SSE had even secured $20 million in government funding to construct a stadium in the Halifax area, buoying hopes of commencing play by 2022. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 prompted a shutdown of government funding in 2021, derailing their momentum.
“In March of 2020, we felt that we had extremely strong government support,” Drummond recalled, highlighting the subsequent challenges and the need to restart discussions with policymakers. Despite setbacks, SSE remains optimistic about the renewed viability of their proposal, citing various factors that bolster their case for government backing.
As they continue navigating the complexities of securing funding and support, SSE remains committed to their long-term vision of bringing CFL football to the Maritimes. Their current focus on groundwork and strategic planning underscores a deliberate approach aimed at ensuring sustainable progress towards their ambitious goal.
