JUST IN: Bernalillo Settles Its Boys Basketball Major Coaching Situation With High Profile 54-Year-Old

Bernalillo’s original plans took an unexpected turn, but they’ve now solidified their strategy for the upcoming boys basketball season. Bryan Gonzales, 54, will step into the role of associate head coach at the school. Initially, former Rio Rancho High standout Chris Williams was set to fill this position, but a change of heart led to a reset, explained Spartans athletic director Ira Harge Jr.

Gonzales, a former St. Michael’s player and assistant coach alongside Harge during Pecos High’s multiple state championship victories, brings a wealth of experience. He has previously served as the head coach for girls’ teams at both Pecos and Escalante. Meanwhile, Harge, who guided Pecos to four consecutive state titles, will hold the title of “executive” head coach for the coming season.

Together, Gonzales and Harge will lead the Bernalillo boys’ basketball program, with Gonzales taking the lead and receiving support from Harge, particularly during home games. Both coaches will collaborate on game plans and player development. Gonzales is optimistic about the team’s potential, and despite the unique coaching situation, he’s fully committed to the boys and the community.

Gonzales, who previously coached the Bernalillo girls soccer program, will focus exclusively on basketball for the 2024-25 school year. According to Harge, the plan is for Gonzales to eventually transition from the “associate” title, underscoring that the coaching arrangement is centered on the team and community without concern for individual recognition.
