Just In: Huge Boost as Saldana Strikes Out 12 To Lead Jackfish Over Cardinals

HAMILTON – Enrique Saldana delivered his best performance of the 2014 Intercounty Baseball League season, leading the Welland Jackfish to an 11-0 victory over the Hamilton Cardinals on Friday. The right-handed pitcher impressed with 12 strikeouts and only allowed two hits over seven innings. Robert Mullen was the standout performer for the Jackfish, contributing five RBI with a two-run home run in the third inning and a three-run double in the fourth. Gianfranco Morello and Greyson Barrett also hit doubles for the defending champions. Brandon Nicholson and Brendon Daley managed the only hits for the Cardinals. The win extends the Jackfish’s (14-3) winning streak to 11 games, and they look to keep the momentum going on Saturday at home against the Barrie Baycats at 6:05pm. The Cardinals (9-8) will be on the road Saturday against the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers at 7:05 p.m.

Majors shut out Royals LONDON – Kaiden Cardoso provided the highlights, while Victor Payano remained composed on the mound as the London Majors secured an 8-0 victory against the Guelph Royals on Friday in Intercounty Baseball League action. Payano secured his second consecutive win with a stellar two-hit performance, striking out seven Royals batters. Rhys Montgomery pitched the entire game in a losing effort. Cardoso’s solo home run and Starling Joseph’s two RBI were instrumental in the Majors’ win. Josh Garton and Jaozef Del Rosario managed the only hits for the Royals. The Majors (12-5) are just two games behind the leading Welland Jackfish and will be back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Royals (9-6) will host the Kitchener Panthers on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Panthers overpower Sox BRANTFORD – The Kitchener Panthers’ offense dominated the Brantford Red Sox in a 12-3 road victory on Friday during Intercounty Baseball League action. The Panthers collected 18 hits and scored three runs in the fifth and eighth innings. Raul Gonzalez led the charge with four hits, including a double, and three RBI. Spencer Ross also had a double in his three-hit performance, contributing three RBI. Nick Burdett recorded a double and two RBI, while David Alvarez hit a double. Dakota Parsons secured the win on the mound, allowing only two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts. Josh Laukkanen was charged with the loss. The Panthers improve to 4-14 and will travel to Guelph on Saturday to face the Royals at 7:30 p.m. The Red Sox (6-11) will hit the road on Sunday to take on the Barrie Baycats at 3:05 p.m.
