JUST IN: Marshall football Adds Assistant to Huff’s

Marshall University made significant coaching announcements on Monday, promoting two of its football assistant coaches to higher positions within the coaching staff.

Telly Lockette, who already serves as Marshall’s running backs coach, was elevated to the position of associate head coach. Alongside him, Bob Shoop, the safeties coach, was promoted to assistant head coach in addition to his current responsibilities.

Lockette, a key member of Coach Huff’s original staff since his tenure began at Marshall, has been instrumental in coaching running backs who consistently rank in the top 25 nationally in rushing each season. Under his guidance, Marshall has achieved the milestone of having a 1,000-yard rusher every year. Lockette’s dedication to the team was highlighted when he declined an offer to join the University of Miami’s coaching staff after the 2022 season. Coach Huff praised Lockette’s impact, emphasizing his contributions not only on the field and in recruitment but also within the community.

Regarding Shoop, his promotion marks the second elevation he has received this offseason. With over four decades of football coaching experience, Shoop transitioned earlier in the offseason from a defensive analyst to the role of safeties coach. He will embark on his second season with Marshall after his stint with the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions in 2023. Coach Huff commended Shoop’s extensive knowledge and respected reputation in the coaching realm, citing his invaluable role as a mentor and advisor within the program.

Looking ahead, Marshall is gearing up for preseason practices commencing just over a month from now, in preparation for their season opener against Stony Brook on August 31st at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
