Just In: Sad News As Houston Running Back Standout Performer Out For Season With Torn ACL
Cougars standout says the non-contact injury happened last week in practice
The Houston Cougars were entering the 2024 season with high expectations for their running back unit, but those plans encountered a major setback.
On August 7, running back Tony Mathis Jr. reportedly tore his ACL during practice, which he later confirmed on Instagram as a non-contact injury. The West Virginia transfer was a key player in Houston’s first season in the Big 12, accumulating 170 rushing yards on 41 carries over 10 games, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Although his performance varied, he regained his form in November, contributing significantly to the offense with 11 receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Mathis’ injury creates a gap in Houston’s backfield, now placing a greater burden on true sophomore Parker Jenkins and fifth-year junior Stacy Sneed. Jenkins led the team in rushing yards in 2023 with 464 yards and three touchdowns, while Sneed, who was the top rusher in 2022, saw his numbers drop to 282 yards last season. With Mathis out, Re’Shaun Sanford II, who was sidelined for the entire 2023 season due to injury, now has a chance to emerge and contribute.
Despite this challenge, the Cougars are focused on starting their season strong against UNLV on August 31. Developing the running game will be vital as they embark on their second season in the Big 12.
