Steelers’ options to replace suspended CB Cameron Sutton

The NFL announced on Monday that Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton has been suspended without pay for the first eight games of the 2024 regular season due to a violation of the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.

An arrest warrant was issued for Sutton related to an alleged domestic violence incident in March. He turned himself in and reportedly entered a pretrial diversion program on misdemeanor battery charges.

Pittsburgh signed Sutton to a one-year deal in June, hoping he would be a plug-and-play solution at slot corner. However, the team will now have to wait until Week 10 for his debut.

Here are four potential options to fill in for Sutton during his suspension:

Josiah Scott, Pittsburgh Steelers

Scott, who joined the Steelers on a reserve/futures contract in January, quickly climbed the depth chart. Before Sutton’s arrival, the 25-year-old was taking most of the first-team defense reps due to his experience. He is likely to continue in this role when training camp opens. The former fourth-round pick has registered 51 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, and eight passes defensed in his four-year NFL career.

Beanie Bishop, Pittsburgh Steelers

Bishop, an undrafted rookie, is a wildcard if Pittsburgh opts to stick with its current roster. He has already impressed general manager Omar Khan. “I can’t tell you how excited we were to have an opportunity to sign Beanie Bishop after the draft,” Khan said on the DVE Morning Show. “I think he’s going to have a great opportunity at nickel to help us this year. He has great special teams value.” Bishop recorded a career-high 67 tackles, four interceptions, and 20 passes defensed in 2023, along with a punt return touchdown.

Chandon Sullivan, Free Agent

If Pittsburgh looks to the open market, reuniting with Sullivan would make sense. The 27-year-old played for the Steelers in 2023, totaling 22 tackles, one forced fumble, one interception, and six passes defensed. While he didn’t earn another contract immediately after the season, his experience and familiarity with the team could make him a viable option.

Patrick Peterson, Free Agent

Although Peterson lost a step last season and was often targeted by opposing teams, Pittsburgh might consider bringing back the 33-year-old for his experience. Peterson expressed his desire to play in 2024 and questioned why so many talented defensive backs are still free agents. “Why do you see so many high-caliber guys who’ve played at a high level, defensive backs, still free agents?” Peterson asked on the “All Things Covered” podcast.
