Just In: Thunder seen as possible trade destination for shot-blocking, board-gobbling big

The OKC Thunder are being viewed by NBA executives as a possible trade destination for a specific defensively-driven veteran center.

As the 2024 NBA Draft approaches in just a few days, the rumor mill is abuzz with activity about the league’s trade market, and notably, the OKC Thunder are deeply involved.

The franchise has already demonstrated its willingness to make significant changes in this area, as evidenced by last week’s deal that sent former lottery pick Josh Giddey to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for the experienced 3-and-D wing, Alex Caruso. According to an NBA Insider, this has led many around the league to believe that Sam Presti and his team could be considering another substantial transaction.

There are reports that the Atlanta Hawks are looking to trade their current cornerstone center, Clint Capela, during this offseason in order to restructure and bolster a more capable supporting roster around their focal point, Trae Young.

Given his NBA experience and specific skill set, the 30-year-old is expected to attract interest from multiple teams in need of center support, prompting NBA executives to keep a close watch on the Thunder as a potential destination.

“For months, many around the league believed Atlanta would split up its backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, but they’re not the only Hawks being monitored.”

Over his decade-long NBA career, Capela has made a name for himself as a dominant force in the league, focusing primarily on the gritty and physical aspects of the game.

Since the 2018-19 season, the center has consistently delivered impressive performances, averaging 13.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game with an outstanding 61.7 percent field goal shooting. He also boasts a remarkable career defensive rating of 107 and an elite offensive rebounding percentage of 15.2.

On paper, a player of his caliber could greatly benefit the Thunder, who have a pressing need for more frontcourt size, strength, and improved rebounding after finishing last in rebounds last season.

However, the prospect of acquiring Capela may pose challenges for Oklahoma City, given their coach’s preference for five-out lineups. Capela’s one-dimensional playing style, largely confined to the restricted area on offense, could disrupt the team’s strategy.

Nevertheless, if used as a reserve center to replace current starter Chet Holmgren or paired with him in a four-out, one-in scheme, Capela’s addition could potentially benefit the team in various ways. Additionally, his contract is set to expire by the end of the 2024-25 season, allowing for an easy exit if the arrangement doesn’t work out.

Ultimately, whether or not to bring on Capela’s shot-blocking, rebounding, and rim-running skills rests with Sam Presti, and fans and analysts should trust his judgment. The unfolding of this situation, particularly in the lead-up to the draft, promises to be intriguing.
